    1. spoilers Overall, a fun and interesting play that is perhaps a bit too predictable The characters are mostly archetypes the dutiful and steadfast wife of the innkeeper, the beautiful and innocent daughter eligible bachelorette, the dashing and handsome bachelor, the portly drunkard priest, the jovial but jealous villager The only really interesting character is Mathias, who outwardly represents the ideal Germanic tradesman upstanding, hardworking, civic minded but whose entire success is based u [...]

    2. 2.5 stars I think that I would have enjoyed Lewis play a whole lot if I d actually watched a performance of it, as opposed to simply reading it like I did for my Literature class Reading plays has never been my forte in terms of enjoyment, and while The Bells contained all the numerous cliches of the melodramatic genre, I found that I liked the play a whole lot when looking at it from a critical point of view.
