    1. It wasn t until the final short story and novella which covers half of the book in this collection that Mr Currey really clicked for me, but by the end I was so attached that I had to go back and reread the first five stories a second time Here in this set you get black lung, dead families, epileptics, and murderers, you get the real hills and hollers You get Red Jacket, Spencer, and Paradise You get Delbert Keane who might convince you that a court of law is the same as an insane asylum is the [...]

    2. This is a collection of characters haunted by events in their lives The book begins with the shorter stories which are so tightly written that they seem moments captured in time which resonate long after they re finished The collection, which is overwhelmingly melancholy, is balanced out by the final and longest story, which is a whimsical comedy with a brooding undertone.

    3. Thank you to LibraryThing and the author for providing me with a copy of this book. The Wars of Heaven is a book of short stories and also the novella The Love of a Good Woman , in which Currey paints a picture of working class America in the twenties and thirties He tells the story of the every day the marriage of a train engineer to a younger woman, the life and loss of coal miners, the wanderings of an epileptic man, a young boy whose birth robs his father of the love of his life, a robber who [...]

    5. This is a book that will start you thinking and then continue to ponder the lives of these people long after you ve finished reading. The six short stories were all quite dour although they were not depressing They made you feel the character s emotions These are stories to read slowly to take in the atmosphere Edward Tyler forced from the family farm due to the Depression James Heard spent fourteen years digging coal and lost his brother to the mines Raymond Dance a coalminer suffering from Blac [...]

    6. This boring collection of stories about life in West Virginia was one of my book group selections I much prefer the short stories of Breece D J Pancake for similar subject matter.
