    1. PLEASE, HARRIS, DONT HURT EM Wow It was with much trepidation combined with excitement that I read this book about slavery in Britain The fourth in the author s Dr Thomas Silkstone series, this book won t be released until July, but I was lucky enough to get an Advanced Readers Copy directly from the publisher As a black American, I was curious to learn about a barely documented part of British history About 8 pages in I was so taken aback by a certain scene that I was thisclose to abandoning t [...]

    2. Title The Lazarus CurseAuthor Tessa HarrisSummary In 1782, London, England, an expedition to Jamaica returns home Its journey to collect plants and fauna of the island claims the lives of its two scientists Dr Thomas Silkstone is entrusted to catalog the specimens But Silkstone is not British and is of the recently independent new country of the Americas and finds himself under constant scrutiny To complicate the issue, Silkstone also finds the deaths of the two scientists suspicious and in his [...]

    3. Dr Silkstone is caught up in a fellow academic s murder, and the murky world of slave freedom in London.I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.First of all, I would like to state that I DID NOT KNOW THIS WAS PART OF A SERIES.When I requested this from Netgalley, nowhere did it mention that this was not the first book it just said that it was a Dr Silkstone book.Nowhere on the cover or introductory pages in my ecopy did it mention the rest of the series or a series [...]

    4. This series is wearing a little thin I think it could become enjoyable again if she would just drop the dead weight that goes by the name Lady Lydia Farrell Here s a hint If Lydia likes someone, you can bet that they re going to be a total dillweed with the exception of Thomas, of course I just no longer give a crap about her and I want Thomas to find someone less Mary Sue I m rooting for the newly widowed Miss Perrick She seems clever and could be a suitable partner for a man of intelligence li [...]

    5. This book is a case of I should have checked before listening to it.When I saw this book while browsing through my library s catalogue of downloadable audiobooks, I had no idea it was the fourth book in the series The title sounded interesting so I decided I wanted to give it a go Why not Sounded interesting enough.I started it without problem Not confusing or hard to follow Harris does a great job of backtracking to remind people what happened without making it awkward It felt natural and I was [...]

    6. A fantastic mystery set in London that masterfully blends natural science, the cruelties of slavery, and voodoo into a heart pounding adventure that will leave the reader chilled to the bone. The Lazarus Curse follows Dr Thomas Silkstone as he finds himself smack in the middle of a deadly adventure when he asked to catalogue the specimens brought back by an ill fated expedition to the new world When an important journal disappears and the only remaining member of the expedition party is murdered, [...]

    7. I could break The Lazarus Curse down into three parts the mystery what happened to Matthew Bartlett, the botanist artist who disappeared upon returning from Jamaica the background research and storyline on the plight of slaves who were brought to England by their masters and what s going on with Lydia, Thomas lover. The mystery was okay There s supposedly a Lazarus Potion that can bring people back from the dead, and the theory is that the expedition found the formula and someone killed Bartlett [...]

    8. The Lazarus Curse is the fourth outing for 18th century anatomist Dr Thomas Silkstone, and the good Dr has been invited by the president of the Royal Society to catalogue flora and fauna recently collected by three scientists on a research expedition to the West Indies This trip has been rather ill fated as 2 of the 3 died on the journey home and the third, Matthew Bartlett has disappeared with a notebook which details the ships discoveries. This is not just a mystery set in 18th century London, [...]

    9. I agree with several other reviewers who are tired of the Lydia Thomas dynamic Not so much the romance, but the nonstop hurdles to the romance Plus, Lydia started the series with the promise of being woman finding her strength interesting but has since turned into the heroine tied to the railroad tracks waiting for a man to save her boring Also, does Dr Silkstone HAVE any flaws Let s see a little depth from this do gooder Despite my criticisms, of course I ll read the next book since young Amer [...]

    10. I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review In 1780s London, American anatomist Dr Thomas Silkstone is plunged into a swirling cauldron of sorcery, slavery, and cold blooded murder .When the sole survivor of an ill fated scientific expedition to Jamaica goes missing upon his return to London, Dr Thomas Silkstone entrusted with cataloging the expedition s New World specimens feels compelled to investigate There are rumors of a potion that has the power to [...]

    11. A good solid mystery novel with some actual historical detail mixed in and a some voodoo as well This one really focuses on the cruelty of slavery and the shocking way some slave owners treated human beings worse than property The main characters aren t anything memorable, but the historical setting and complicated mystery plot are worth the read The book was good enough that I ll likely try another in this series.

    12. I truly enjoy Victorian English murder mystery s Tessa Harris is by far one of the greatest authors when it comes to this subject This book was outstanding The mysterious trip to Jamaica as well as the mysterious Lazarus potion will keep you reading well into the night As to the ending, I couldn t believe it You will just have to read it for yourself to discover what happens Enjoy

    13. 3,5 stars I enjoyed this book 4 than book 3, but it does end on a cliffhanger, which is kind of unforgivable, but I ve decided to tentatively forgive it and read book 5, after which time I will know if I have fully forgiven it or not.

    14. Another good one in the Dr Silkstone series Looking forward to the next oneI hope it comes out in audio at the library soon.

    15. It is such a great honor for me to have been the first Audible member to review this book In May 2014, it was with much trepidation combined with excitement, that I read the print version of this book about slavery in Britain The fourth in the author s Dr Thomas Silkstone series was released in July, but I was lucky enough to get an Advanced Readers Copy ARC directly from the publisher And now I get a second swipe at the brass ring with the audio version WOW As a black American, I was curious to [...]

    16. The Lazarus Curse was an incredible story that carries the feel of a Kathy Reichs Bones novel with a nod towards Sherlock Holmes With its accurate historical forensic anthropology and anatomy descriptions and obviously well referenced historical events, the author blurred reality and fiction and the result was incredible Exploring societal issues and themes like slavery that were pervasive for the setting of the book, I was sucked immediately into a world entirely foreign and entire appealing to [...]

    17. This is another mystery in the series featuring Dr Silkstone, who is an anatomist He is in love with Lady Lydia Farrell The last book had the law separating Lady Farrell, from Dr Silkstone, because she had located her son, and since the war treaty between the American Colonists, and the English had not been accepted Dr Silkstone is still considered an enemy, and was not permitted to be around Lydia s young son, of noble birth, by law Broken hearted, but determined, he has returned to London, and [...]

    18. This is the fourth in this excellent series surrounding the character of Dr Thomas Silkstone, an American physician surgeon who moved to London during the 1780 s The author prefaced the book by explaining that she came across the plight of black slaves during this time period in British colonies and the British mainland Although the enslavement of blacks in Great Britain was against the law, a black slave that was brought into the country from the colonies or other locations could still be consi [...]

    19. This is the fourth novel in the Dr Thomas Silkstone series and this one deals with a social issue not often encountered in historical mystery novels set in England, namely slavery Author Tessa Harris has obviously done her research homework and compiled an entertaining historical mystery while dealing sympathetically with the slavery issue from many angles even though she says in her Author s Notes that the research material was not easy to come by Dr Silkstone is an American anatomist and surge [...]

    20. The Lazarus Curse is the fourth volume in Tessa Harris s Dr Thomas Silkstone mystery series It s the first of these novels that I ve read and I m definitely looking forward to reading .Thomas Silkstone is a surgeon and anatomist in London, shortly after England s defeat by its American colonies Silkstone is highly capable at his craft he s also an enemy alien He s accorded respect and distrust in equal amounts. In this novel, Silkstone has been hired to inventory the samples from a scientific exp [...]

    21. I wasn t aware this was the 4th book in a series, but I enjoyed it all the same I found it a fascinating account of a dark period in British history, namely slavery, and as the author notes, accounts are sparse and difficult to authenticate as so many rich families were involved in this trade and have of necessity covered up their records I learnt many new facts about slavery including that slaves who fought for King George against America were given their freedom and many came to Great Britain [...]

    22. Recommended The Lazarus Curse, a Dr Silkstone Mystery, by Tessa HarrisHarris 4th book in her Dr Silkstone series is another winner, this time taking on the horrors faced by slaves and former slaves in England in the 1700s If you like historical fiction, mysteries, forensics, and a touch of romance, this series is definitely a must I gave the novel only 4 stars because I reserve 5 stars for only the best of the best.As has been the case with Harris previous novels, The Lazarus Curse is well resea [...]

    23. 3.5 StarsI received a free copy of this book through NetGalley.Overall a good read Fans of this book should definitely check out The Yard, by Alex Grecian, The Alienist, by Caleb Carr, and the Barker Llewelyn series by Will Thomas.I feel like I entered this book at a slight disadvantage, because I haven t read any of the prior book in the Dr Silkstone series For the vast majority of this book, it wasn t a problem, but I can tell that there was a lot to Silkstone s relationship with Lydia and he [...]

    24. The Lazarus Curse This is part of the Dr Thomas Silkstone series set in England in the 1780 s, and the only one I ve read The plot has multiple threads 1 the categorization of specimen s of flora from the West Indies at the request of Joseph Banks, 2 the treatment of slaves in England, and the attempts to challenge the law, 3 the trafficking of corpses for dissection, 4 the subjugation of women, and 5 murder. This is the second book I ve read in the last year dealing with Joseph Bank s and his fi [...]
