    1. When I began to read Solal I wasn t very sure I might have come to its end being this a French edition and I did not deem my French so much good To my surprise, I could easily follow the story and I got totally seduced by it The book opens with a 14 years old Solal introducing his family, his uncles and his Mediterranean isle of Cefalonia Then, after a time skip of 2 years, we found a rebellious 16 years old Solal that falls in love with the 26 years old wife of the French consul discovering the [...]

    2. I read Belle du Seigneur before reading this one, therefore I was happy to reacquaint with our dear Solal and his oh so grotesque family, to learn how he managed his stellar social climbing I liked this book, but I think it is no match for Belle du Seigneur It s like this book was a sketch whereas Belle du Seigneur was the real masterpiece It is nonetheless a great book.

    3. I loved neither the author s writing style, nor the story I wanted to read Belle du Seigneur, but, after this book, I m really afraid I won t like it I only grew attached to Salomon, but I really could not bear Solal so sexist, macho and self centered A crazy story that didn t blow me away, and a man s life that didn t win me over.

    6. I don t know what to make of this book It feels like I have read a fan fiction of Belle du seigneur and not the best one Maybe Cohen was too young when he wrote it, maybe the time was not right.I still appreciate the style, although it is not even remotely as good as the third book of the cycle.

    7. Terrible, the single star for the few and far between amusing parts The book is a mix of a mediocre adventure novel and the lunatic and pathetic ravings of an extremely unpleasant and unlikable character Solal Best forgotten It seems to have been a big success when it came out Why, I wonder.
