    1. This book is well beyond the standard excellent, in fact The story of a bitter Union Dr and a godly, frustrated nurse with ties to both N and S, it avoids easy answers Dr Mackay is angry and hurting, a good Dr but not a good man Emily Davis is trying to help and heal everyone in her path, regardless of their affiliations, including Union doctors Neither is perfect, both seem very real.I love it when all I m hoping for in a book is a pleasant story to kill some time and then I get In this case t [...]

    2. I m a sucker for homefront stories and this one is completely amazing The setting is a divided Maryland since they were a border state, loyalties were divided and that in and of itself is tragic Gettysburg has ended, but the wounded are still flooding local military hospitals from the gritty field hospitals.History aside, we have a very strong female character Emily She is awesome volunteering as a nurse in a Union hospital and doing everything she can for the wounded If I d lived in that time p [...]

    3. This book was not amazing because it was the most amazing romance novel I have ever read, but it was amazing because the author portrayed the circumstances in a realistic and historically accurate way Frequently I read historical romances that rely on urban legends and junk history to fill their pages, but this one had none of that It portrayed both side with understanding and did well at reflecting the tension that could occur between the occupier and occupied.

    4. I really enjoyed this book about a Scottish Union doctor who must learn to let go of his troubled past and his loved ones loss before he can realize that the Confederate POW s in his ward, as well as his nurse Emily, who also has sympathy with her Confederate friends, are worthy of forgiveness and love This book shows clearly the horrors of the Civil War and how it divided our nation and our people on many issues and also shows how healing can be accomplished not only physically but spiritually [...]

    5. In most romances, it s all about getting the man and woman together How this is done is a challenge for the author, and Shannon Farrington proves herself than up to that challenge, as she writes two complex characters falling in love during the closing days of the Civil War.The story is set in a Union hospital in Balti, Maryland Evan Mackay is a Union doctor treating both Confederate and Union soldiers and nursing a grudge because his brother, Andrew, was killed by a Confederate led mob Emily D [...]

    6. I didn t realize this book was a Faith based love story when I picked it up I certainly figured that out quickly Within the first few pages it became evident this was a Faith based book It was a little distracting but the overall message and theme was not detracted from it I did find this book fairly predictable It felt forced that the two main characters fall in love It seemed like a romance of convenience in that they worked together It was a little forced to see a staunch Union doctor end up [...]

    7. The book in itself was very well developed, and the intimacy was endearing, but I didn t like how most of the time it was the girl who cared for the man, and there was like no feeling from the man until nearly the end I didn t like how this author clumped the guy s feelings into 3 chapters There should have been a slightly noticeable starting point, closer to the beginning Not too much closer Same with the girl, it kind of just poured the romance on after the third to last chapter, and was rush [...]

    8. Civil war and the hatred between country men is always hard to read about This story is about a Union Doctor and a Southern nurse They work together to heal both the Union and Confederate soldiers While Dr Evan Mackay feels the guilt of going to war and not being there when his wife died, Emily Davis refuses to sign a loyalty oath in order to work in the hospital After crossing off the lines she can t agree to, she signs the oath and enjoys her time helping out Soon she has a change of attitude [...]

    9. This story is about Emily, a nurse who serves wounded soldiers on both sides of the conflict in the Civil War, and the many internal conflicts she experiences The faith journey of Dr Evan McKay is wonderful to read, and very believable The emotions that those in states such as Maryland experienced as they tried to reconcile what was going on around them were portrayed very well in many of the characters in this novel, and, I feel, helped the reader to understand what that time period would have [...]

    10. I was given this book for review purposes This is a very sweet love story set in a secessionist state during the civil war It focuses on the faith of a southern nurse and the hard heart of a federal doctor forced to attend to rebel prisoners of war It was a charming book and I enjoyed it very much

    11. A riveting story about the Civil War, brothers torn apart on both sides, the medical emergencies, loss of limbs because that s all the doctor could do to save lives Story from point of view of a nurse who took care of wounded from both sides.

    12. Interesting Historiical novel heavy on the religious viewpoint, but a good story and a lot about Balti and Maryland during the Civil War.

    13. I throughly enjoyed this book Its the first book that I have read that was set during civil war times It was entertaining and touching Wonderful book
