    1. An elegantly written 1978 war novel set in France in 1944 where a British corporal and a second lieutenant, a history graduate , are seconded as interpreters to a commando force for a mysterious mission which turns out to be far byzantine than either anticipates Although rather marred by too much conversation, this is a good read as it s much than just a simple story of treachery and double cross 4.5 stars.

    2. This is the first book in the series that breaks away from the 1970s timeline and gives us the first meeting of Butler and Audley during WWII Giving a solid back story to the previous books, there is no archaeological aspect to this story, but than made up with the detail of the perilous life of a soldier at war.

    3. Like The Hour of the Donkey , this provides backstory for the Audley universe, providing the chronological introduction of Audley and Butler Unlike the previous book, this is an excellent read better plotted, generally believable, and morally ambiguous and closer villains.
