    1. As the newest member of my book club I felt added pressure to suggest a good title for the group to read and discuss However, knowing that all the members of our group enjoy historical fiction I had confidence in suggesting a title by Jocelyn Green Time and again Green has delighted me with well researched, well written, and flawlessly delivered Civil War era novels Widow of Gettysburg was no exception. In Widow of Gettysburg, Green assembles a diverse group of characters a seminary school drop o [...]

    2. This book, unlike the first, is character driven There is still plenty of history for us history buffs, but the heroine in this novel seems prevalent and real than the backdrop This book takes a look at what a war leaves behind broken homes, relationships, people, and entire towns We tend to focus on just the battles not the aftermath that is left behind This book will take you there and make it real A truly captivating read I highly recommend it.

    3. Widow of Gettysburg, book 2 of Heroines Behind the Lines, is yet another great ready by Jocelyn Green Loved the first one in the series and pushed my list around to read this second one because I couldn t wait to see what was going to happen on this trip behind the lines of the Civil War with strong courageous women I wasn t disappointed Of course, my favorite characters were Liberty and Silas I loved the verses from Phil 3 13, 14 which summed up Liberty and Silas Brethren, I count not myself to [...]

    4. In this heartrending story of the Battle of Gettysburg Jocelyn Green gives us a look into the lives of several of the many women that struggled to survive the horrors of war Liberty Holloway, our nineteen year old heroine has been a widow for almost two years since her young husband Levi died in the Battle of Bull Run Since a young age Liberty was taught by her cruel aunt she wasn t worth anything and that she would never make anything of her life That s why her mother gave her away So now Liber [...]

    5. We can let tragedy define us, or we can refuse to let the story end there Page 365 Widow of Gettysburg is an incredible follow up to Wedded to War in the Heroines Behind the Lines series This book sets up the reader in the Gettysburg area right before the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War We get an up close and personal look at real people not the soldiers who bravely fought on each side, but the people living in Gettysburg just before and during the battle. We look into the faces of inju [...]

    6. I had a hard time putting this book down as I wanted to see what happened next It was a must read for me I have always been interested in history, and especially anything pertaining to the Civil War I was fascinated from almost the first page of the book Having been to Gettysburg, I actually could picture a lot of the scenes and where they took place.I enjoyed learning about some of the characters backgrounds Bellaa former slave Liberty.a widow of this terrible war Silas.a young man And many .Wh [...]

    7. Widow of Gettysburg introduced me to something I haven t ever thought about, the people who lived in Gettysburg during the battle and what happened to them afterwards Everything I know about Gettysburg is of the battle and the event that led up to it Bear with me, it s about to turn into a history lesson recap. The South had just lost one of it s best generals, Stonewall Jackson Stepping into Jackson s place as second in command is General Longstreet The South has been winning every major battle [...]

    8. As one who has studied war in college but not experienced it in real life, I found Jocelyn Green s Widow of Gettysburg to be effective at conveying the horrors of battle than most of the non fiction I read in college Part of it is that I cannot see myself in the place of a soldier, which is the viewpoint taken by most when writing of war, but I can see myself as Liberty Holloway, a woman who knows nothing of battle but suddenly ends up in the midst of its aftermath She is not particularly happy [...]

    9. I met Jocelyn Green last year at ICRS and absolutely loved her first novel, Wedded to War that interview and review are here , which was nominated for two Christy Awards It was with eager anticipation that I opened Widow of Gettysburg and I must say it exceeded my expectations Drawing from journals and writings of women who lived through the Civil War, an era where genteel ladies were generally shielded from anything that might upset their sensibilities, Green shows how the reality of the war la [...]

    10. Ms Green s meticulous attention to historical detail is a hallmark of her style She has a compelling voice, and creates plots and characters that surprise, delight, challenge and ultimately inspire Liberty Halloway lost her husband early on in the war, and has been left to run her farm near Gettysburg with only the help of a hired freed woman and the companionship of a half blind and deaf Newfoundland dog Dressed in grave clothes , she greets a potential boarder who turns out to be a half starve [...]

    11. An intriguing look at the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of several women, I was able to read this book during the days of the battle, 150 years later The only thing that would have made it better would have been there on the battlegrounds for the celebration.Jocelyn Green interweaves the fictional character s lives throughout the actual facts from women who were there and facts from research of books on the War, and I think she does it with great finesse Liberty, Libby as some people cal [...]

    12. The wounded had been culled from all private homes by now, and the women scrubbed away at the residue of war Page 284 Throughout the ages, women have attempted to scrub away the residue of war Despite the fact that some stains won t scrub and some wounds won t heal, that has never stopped women from trying The women of Gettysburg were no different they desperately wanted to cleanse and heal they wanted to restore Widow of Gettysburg is a compelling story of the agonies and realities behind the f [...]

    13. Prepare to be shocked by this next statement I read a book about the Civil War and I loved it It s like me saying I love Del Taco You know, like I ve never mentioned that before to the internet. Here s why I liked it 1 I really enjoyed the first book in the series Wedded to War.2 Jocelyn Green bases her stories off of real people I love that.3 It deals with the Civil War.4 There was mention of the Massachusetts 54th.Widow of Gettysburg is a fantastic and wonderful second book of Jocelyn Green s H [...]

    14. This book was very disappointing The first half of the book contained nothing but facts, it seemed, and was very choppy This would have been fine if the author hadn t completely switched gears in the middle and suddenly it is all about the hero and heroine s and about a gazillion other characters emotional problems There were so many switched points of view that I got lost at times I also felt as if the author didn t do her homework Every single confederate person in the entire book was portraye [...]

    15. A visit to Gettysburg several years ago left me wondering how the women who lived there returned to normal life in the aftermath of that horrific battle I could imagine the sights and smells they learned to endure, but I longed to know of the details of their lives Jocelyn Green s masterful Widow of Gettysburg answered my questions and filled in the many gaps in my knowledge of the battle of Gettysburg The novel s main character, Liberty Holloway, is in the process of turning a home she inherit [...]

    16. Liberty Holloway is a young widow trying to find the pieces to her life But when her farm is confiscated by the Confederate army to use as a hospital, Liberty has some difficult decisions to make Are the men in gray her enemies, or are they simply human beings that need her help This was a good book, but I got a little bored with it since it seemed so similar in many ways to the first book in the series Wedded to War But I would recommend it to a friend, though I advise a word of caution if you [...]

    17. This novel is a must read for anyone who loves history, romance, stories of faith, and great fiction I can t believe how easily the pages turned as I found myself lost in the main character s struggle to survive this tumultuous time in our nation s history Liberty, Bella, and the other men and women represented in Widow of Gettysburg embody the very heart and strength of our country Whether widowed by war, born into slavery, or even innocent civilians caught in the crossfire, all who step onto t [...]

    18. I was sad to say after having read and enjoying Wedded to War that I didn t enjoy this book at all It has wonderful reviews and Jocelyn Green seems to be a very well researched and engrossing writer so this is really my own preference I can t say I really liked anybody in this story I never took a liking to Liberty or Bella and Silas was just sad and hard for me to root for This book is extremely graphic in nature way so than Wedded to War in my opinion and maybe some of that overshadowed the s [...]

    19. Historical fiction is good for me as I try to imagine history through the eyes of real people Jocelyn Green has done her research into this one, and bases her novel from the history and letters written by the women of the time period and Gettysburg town and area It was hard to read, considering all the realities of war chronicled here, but the plot kept me plodding ahead, and I m glad I finished the book What a story of God s intent for people to move forward from pain, fear, and their pasts and [...]

    20. If I could ve given this book 13 stars, I would have I absolutely loved it Gettysburg is one of my favorite places to visit in the past and present Yes, the battlefields grab at my heart but it s the civilian stories that really appeal to my heart This was one of the best that I ve read so far Get it and read it Women were strong back then some, so than today.

    21. Wow Not a book for the faint of heart A roller coaster of fiction, truth, history, love, hatred, war, peace, despair, hope, faith and that tugged at my heart and touched my soul I have always respected those who gave their lives for MY freedom, but this book gave me a new found respect for those who survived and what they endured to do so Just an excellent read

    22. I have not been able to put this book down This is a very good book to read with the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg coming up with Celebrations in Cashtown to Gettysburg telling you how it really was.I really enjoyed this book it will be one of my favorites.Sandra Clippinger

    23. When you read historical fiction and it touches your heart in so many ways, you have to share with others Truthfully, I chose to purchase this book because I knew little about Gettysburg I knew it was a pivotal battle of the war many men died and were wounded and President Lincoln gave one of history s most amazing speeches at the dedication of the National Soldier s Cemetary in November, 1863 What I learned, while reading this novel, was an inside glimpse into the hardships and the dedication t [...]

    24. I downloaded this ebook to my Nook library when it was free from Barnes and Noble because I like historical fiction It is the second book in the series, Heroines Behind the Lines Since this is the second book, I had an expectation of this author s style, and I still find her storytelling to be uneven as Green has a tendency to use the characters to get preachy directly to the reader Green bases her fictional character on research into historical characters and sometimes combines too many problem [...]

    25. Really great book I ve been to Gettysburg 3 times now, so I knew a lot of the places events that were written about I love how these stories get into the every day life of the women and families Very lightly political views are shared, but not much I think how Bible passages are woven into the story, but not like bam here s the sermon She didn t skirt the issues of the day, but she did gracefully cover them It took me awhile to read the book because of work and other things It really shouldn t h [...]

    26. A well researched historical novel Characters had depth and were well developed I would definitely read books by this author.

    27. Impeccably researched A great look at how the famous battle impacted the citizens of Gettysburg Also an excellent look at many of social issues present during that time.

    28. So compelling, fascinating, and believable i was pulled in from start to finish Intriguing history and an extremely engaging storyline from our own history.
