1 thought on “Awake in the Mad World

    1. Once patience no longer feels like a labor, then you re set to really do some great things Awake in the Mad World is beautifully written with passion and verve Marbut comes through with his portrayal of twenty something wanders searching for their places in the world The narrator, Pete Rattigan is tender, introspective, and someone you can t help but connect with Brody, on the other hand, is nearly ADHD, always going off on tangents and can t seem to focus himself These two characters create a w [...]

    2. Place and where we find ourselves in itThere is something about the skill with which Damon Ferrell Marbut paints his debut novel that for some reason conjures the images of isolation of American painter Edward Hopper that eerie spirit of isolation in that midst of a world at once too much with us and yet quietly not within our reach Not that Marbut s exquisite novel AWAKE IN THE MAD WORLD is a period piece from the time of Hopper mid 20th century quite the opposite this is a book about now, yet [...]

    3. I have noticed many reviews of this book comparing it with the writings of the Beat Generation, something that is quite in the news with the upcoming release of On the Road Certainly the book is well crafted, with a distinct and clear voice of the narrator, whose identity seeps into the story gradually just as the characters are introduced Their places in the narrative enter slowly as there is not a strong story arc to drive the reader on At least not until the final 4th act of the non plot Howe [...]

    4. Awake in the Mad World by Damon Ferrell Marbut was recommended to me by a friend. It is a strong novel that portrays a group of young people and their reflections on the society world they enter.Told with very sharp observationism and masterful reflection on the characters, their encounters, lives and their wider surroundings this is a rather rich and intense read that is insightful and thought provoking Damon Ferrel Marbut is a talent to watch out for.At times there seems a lack of strict formal [...]

    5. Excellent read I just finished reading this book and will be re reading it The book is rich with the complexities of the human experience It provoked a roller coaster of thoughts and emotions as I followed and found myself in every character at various times This is a good thing for me as I was re affirmed in my belief in the inescapable interconnection I have with all humankind I look forward to my next ride on this roller coaster because I know I will have a different experience based on my me [...]

    6. I had the chance to read this book in one of its earliest forms, and it was, and is, a wonderful journey It reads like a Beats novel set in present day, but trying to label it is doing it an injustice Marbut is able to capture the feelings of so many post college young adults of this generation who are trying to figure out where they belong in this crazy world It s a beautiful, thoughtful read.

    7. TBR primarily because of this topic show 9The terms pathetic and wrong are used I d add the following embarrassing and huge turn off.But apparently, not an isolated activity See topic show 2 SMH and walks away

    8. I thought the book was brilliantly written in a language that everyone can understand It explores the changing understanding of life from generation to generation I thought in parts it was also quite funny alongside being incredibly moving What an amazing book

    9. An intense first novel from an emerging writer exploring the decisions that a group of young friends must wrestle with as they are thrown or dive into the adult world with all its expectations

    10. Read this book twice, brought me to tears not just from the pure emotion But how wonderfully, socially relevant this story is Damon Ferrell Marbut to me is a genius His use of Grammar is not only hysterical at times, but different and wonderful Definitely read this book This man is unstoppable.

    11. This is without question one of the best books I ve read in years Awake in the Mad World describes perfectly what young Americans face today in growing up as creative thinkers and dreamers in a fast paced technological world The story is so full of heart I didn t want it to end Unforgettable characters I can t say that about a lot of other books these days Bravo

    12. Didn t get very far in this one The grammar is quite tortured and the author s expressions did not make sense to me.
