    1. Heart wrenching I can t begin to imagine what it must have been like to live through this or to endure the pain of sending my own little son to such a futile, barbaric war.

While this is very well written and a detailed account of WW1 particularly as experienced by three brothers and their family it differs from some others in being in effect a biography.The accounts and attitudes stem a good deal from their records diaries and letters written in the style of the time, which is valuable in itself to preserve.While the personalities and their circumstances come across, to some extent I found myself somewhat desensitised rather than engaged with the characters, as on [...]

    3. I loved this one but as the author is a distant cousin and the brothers are my Great Grandmother s younger brothers, I could be biased Lots of family secrets and evidence of the utter waste of war.
